Karlyn Pipes-Neilsen
is one of the most recognized masters swimmer in the world. She recently filmed an instructional DVD with Glenn Mills from Go swim Productions
entitled Freestyle Swimming with Karlyn Pipes-Neilsen. She was voted 2004 World Masters Swimmer of the Year by Swimming World Magazine. She currently holds 48 FINA Masters
World records
and 96 USMS National records spanning three age groups. She was also the United States Masters swimmer of the year for 1997, 2002 and 2003. Karlyn is also an open-water champion, recently setting new course records in a variety of swims all over Hawaii Island. Karlyn has over 18 years experience coaching masters swimmers.
Eric Neilsen
has over 15 years of experience coaching both masters and USA swimmers. Eric is a tried and true multi-sport athlete having
competed in triathlons of all distances since 1985. Eric is also an All-American masters swimmer, a 2:59 marathon runner and a 2005 Boston marathon qualifier. Certifications include: ACE
(American Council on Exercise) Personal Trainer, ASCA (American Swim Coaches Association) Level Four Certified Coach. Aquatic Edge: Karlyn and Eric moved from San Diego, CA. to Kona, Hawaii, and started Aquatic Edge. With over thirty-five years of coaching between the two, it is not
surprising that they have achieved tremendous success in very short period of time and are now sought after to teach clinics all over the world. The goal of Aquatic Edge is to
provide a positive and fun learning environment while teaching people how to swim faster with less effort. The freestyle stroke progression techniques taught in the clinic are applicable to any
swimmer and/or multi sport athlete, of any age or ability. The clinics are also affordable, do not take up an entire weekend (perfect for the busy athlete), and may also be scheduled during an
existing masters practice time (depending on clinic length). Karlyn recently filmed an instructional DVD with Glenn Mills from Go Swim Productions entitled Freestyle Swimming
with Karlyn Pipes-Neilsen.
The stroke Karlyn uses and what both Karlyn and Eric teach has been called a "wide entry, early catch" freestyle and is similar to the style used by top Australian and USA Olympic swimmers. It is also a variation of the "front quadrant" freestyle. Karlyn, the 2004 World Masters Swimmer of the Year, changed to this style in 1999 and has been achieving lifetime bests in both freestyle and butterfly events!
Karlyn and Eric are excellent instructors because they themselves are currently competitive swimmers and use the techniques taught in the clinic. They also believe in keeping the
language simple
and try to use examples found in any aquatic environment. It is also very obvious that they really enjoy what they are doing, have a ton of energy and like to have fun! Their teaching style is interactive, supportive and woven with personal experience.
